Our friend Anička Marková helped us choose this coffee again, who is currently in Rwanda, where she visited the Kayumbu washing station and met the manager Christine Mukarugori, who you can see in the photos.
Our first Rwanda comes from the Kayumbu station, where very strict coffee production standards are used. The station was built by the Rwandan army and is designed to handle a huge amount of coffee cherries each season. In 2013, the station was bought by Rwacof and since then it has been working with more than 1055 farmers supplying coffee cherries to the station.
After being purchased from the farmers, the cherries undergo a strict sorting process. First, the low-quality ones are separated from the good ones using the "floating" method, then the best ones are checked manually. After sorting, roughly 80% of the pulp is removed from the cherries and they are then fermented for 10 hours. Then the processors wash them in clean water and spread them out on African beds, where they are regularly checked and raked to ensure even drying.
Under the auspices of the Kahawatu Foundation, Rwacof invests in this station to improve yields and train farmers. Based on the collected data, the quality of the soil is checked so that it is not too acidic. They also focus on increasing environmental sustainability and improving the overall quality of life for farmers - they focus on gender equality and support several women's associations by helping them get their coffee to market. They also offer training on financial literacy and alternative earning activities.
