TRANSPARENT REPORT

8/10

Our second Christmas package contains a unique microlot from El Recreo farm by farmer Alirio Rodriguez .

Alirio Rodriguez has been growing coffee for over 30 years. He is a third-generation coffee producer and bought his farm , Finca El Recreo , at the age of 15. Today, he focuses on achieving high quality coffee and sustainable prices. He is joined by his two adult children who work with him on the farm.

Alirio switched to premium coffee in 2018. He made the switch due to low commercial coffee prices and a desire to improve and expand his coffee production. The Caturron variety is a relatively new variety from Acevedo, Colombia, that is virtually unknown outside of the region. Its exact genetic origins are currently unknown, but the variety is quickly becoming recognized for its distinctive flavor and large cherry. Caturron is also resistant to coffee leaf rust and has relatively high yields.

GROWING

One of the biggest challenges Alirio faces is climate change and its impact on flowering and harvesting. It also struggles with high input costs. As it seeks to improve the quality of its coffee, it plans to invest in a large mechanical dryer that would make drying more consistent and controllable.

PROCESSING

Once the red cherries are harvested, Alirio places the cherries on raised beds to dry them. The cherries are often raked to ensure even drying.

CATURRON

Caturron is one of several new varieties in Huila, Colombia. “Rumor has it that there was an experimental research farm near Acevedo, Huila,” explains Juan Andres Gutierrez, Special Supply Chain Coordinator for Sucafina in Colombia. “When the project was abandoned, the plants were left behind.” Now, several new varieties have been selected and propagated in Huila that are not found anywhere else. Caturron, which translates to “big Caturra,” is one of these mysterious varieties. It is unclear whether Caturron is genetically distinct from any other known variety, as it has not yet been officially sequenced. However, the unique characteristics and flavors of these varieties are something that farmers in Huila are taking notice of, and many farmers are breeding and processing these varieties in different batches. We are happy to have such unique and delicious varieties on offer!
